We’re taking real action, not just talk – Defence Minister on galamsey fight

Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah has reaffirmed the current government’s strong commitment to fighting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In a recent Facebook post, Dr. Boamah criticized the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for what he described as a failure to sustain military involvement in anti-galamsey operations, calling it a “cardinal sin against humanity.”

According to him, President John Dramani Mahama’s administration has reversed that decision and re-deployed the military to actively fight galamsey, a move that has already led to the protection of seven forest reserves.

Dr. Boamah stressed that the government prefers to focus on real action rather than holding talk shops.

He also revealed that authorities are now using vehicle chassis numbers to trace the real owners of machines involved in illegal mining, as part of efforts to hold those responsible accountable.

While some reports claim that individuals affiliated with the new government are engaging in illegal mining activities, Dr. Boamah’s message makes it clear that the administration is prioritizing environmental protection and is determined to clean up the sector.
