We’re solving our energy crisis by investing in solar power – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that his government is prioritizing renewable energy infrastructure as a long-term solution to the nation’s energy crisis. He said, it is the intentions of the government to ensure full electrification of the country by the end of the year. President Akufo-Addo was addressing a gathering at ceremony held in Kaleo in the Upper West Region to inaugurate phase 2 of the Kaleo Solar Power Plant on April 24, 2024.

Addressing the gathering, President Akufo-Addo said, “It is our intention to attain full electricity access by the end of this year, up from the current rate of 88.8%.

“I expect that, with this project in this community, corporate social responsibility programmes for Kaleo and its environment will be enhanced through the provision of social amenities by the appropriate authorities, including VRA,” he told the gathering.

President Akufo-Addo expressed hope that the Kaleo Solar Power Plant will not only provide light to the people of the region and power their businesses, but will also attract investors to the area.

“By investing in renewable energy infrastructure, we are securing a reliable source of electricity and creating new opportunities for economic growth and job creation. This plant will not only power homes and businesses, but also serve as a catalyst for development in the Upper West Region, attracting investment and spurring innovation.”

According to him, the government’s dream is not only to supply electricity to Ghanaian homes but to also create and eco-friendly country. He said it is a vision to position Ghana as a leader in clean energy, a way to inspire countries in the region to follow suit.

“The vision, however, is not only to be energy self-sufficient, but also to set the stage for Ghana to emerge as an eco-friendly country in the Region, inspiring neighbouring countries to follow suit in their pursuit of a greener, more energy-technology-centred future.”

About the Kaleo Solar Power Plant

Situated in the Upper West Region, the Kaleo Solar Power Plant is a VRA-owned solar power plant that is expected to generate a total of 28 MW of electricity for the country. The project is in two phases of which phase 1 was completed and commissioned in August 2022.

Following the completion of the 13 MW phase one, construction of phase two started. It is expected to add 15 MW, raising the total to 28 MW. The plant is built, owned and operated by the Volta River Authority. Power from the Kaleo Solar Power Plant is lifted by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) which integrates it into the national grid.
