We’ll put import restrictions on rice, sugar, poultry- Mahama tells AGI

Former President John Dramani Mahama has outlined plans to revamp local businesses when given the mandate. The NDC flagbearer in a meeting with the Association of Ghana Industries said there is the need to revamp “strategic industries.”

According to Mr. Mahama, creating a sufficient domestic supply of certain products will enable the nation to boost the economy and improve lives. He mentioned that once some essential industries are made strong to be able to produce certain goods to meet local demand, restrictions can be placed on imports of such goods.

“We work to revamp and reignite strategic industries such as Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) because of the downstream aluminium sector while boosting the production of rice, sugar, tomato, fish, poultry, meat and meat products, vegetable cooking oil, and pharmaceutical products.

“Once local capacity in the production of these and many other products is increased and boosted, we shall place restrictions on the unbridled importation of these items,” Mahama stated.
