We’ll End Galamsey Within Two Years – Movement for Change

The Movement for Change, led by former Minister for Trade and Industry Alan John Kyerematen, has announced that it would revoke the Mining Law—L.I. 2462—if elected into power. This law, passed in 2022, permits mining in forest reserves.

During the JoyNews National Dialogue on WASH and Climate Change on August 13, 2024, the party’s Deputy Director, Courage Nobi, explained that this decision is aimed at completely eradicating illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He further disclosed that an Alan Kyerematen-led government would end galamsey within two years, stating, ‘When you have an illegality occurring, it is irresponsible to use the law to legitimize it.’

Mr. Nobi also called for a new business model to combat illegal mining and criticized both the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party for their failure to end the menace.

He said “The parliament, which is comprised almost equally of the NPP and NDC, should bow its head in shame for passing that law.”

He expressed the opinion that establishing small-scale mining companies for young people involved in galamsey would be the best solution to end the problem.
