We must ensure people don’t suffer and struggle to elect us in vain – Bagbin to MPs

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin Kingsford, has admonished the Members of Parliament, (MPs) to ensure that the struggle citizens go through to elect them do not go in vain but enure to their benefit.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Job 600 building today, October 29, 2024, Bagbin called on stakeholders and Ghanaians to ensure proper functioning of the house as it represents and mirrors Ghana’s democratic gains. The Speaker noted that representatives who are given the nod into the house should not take such opportunity for granted.

He also called for the strengthening of parliament in all departments.

Bagbin said, “If the people are to benefit from democratic governance, it is the Parliament – which is the mirror of democracy that is the focus – that should be strengthened. Because, apart from law making it, is parliament that has the only function of oversight, and it is parliament that should ensure that our collective efforts in terms of energy, in terms of resources, in terms of trust, is appropriately applied to the benefit of everyone.

“So strengthening Parliament is not just the duty of Parliament, but of everybody and we have to work together to make sure that our people don’t suffer and struggle to elect us in vain.”
