“We didn’t…” – Barcelona sporting director Deco refutes Lamine Yamal claims from agent

Lamine Yamal’s contract situation with Barcelona has been a topic of much speculation recently, especially as his current deal expires in the summer of 2026. However, Barcelona fans need not worry, as it is widely expected that the 17-year-old will sign a new contract once he turns 18 in July.

This week, rumors intensified after comments from Yamal’s agent, Jorge Mendes, suggesting that the renewal was discussed during a dinner with Barcelona officials, including president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco. However, Deco quickly denied these claims, stating that the topic of Yamal’s contract wasn’t brought up during the dinner.

Speaking before Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Benfica at the Estadio da Luz, Deco clarified, “We are not going to talk about a renewal with 20 people at the table. We will talk when it is time. He doesn’t have a better place to be. He enjoys himself and is happy and content.”

Yamal initially signed his current contract in 2023, just as he was making his breakthrough into Barcelona’s first team. Due to his age, he could only sign for a maximum of three years, which is why his contract is set to expire next summer. Barcelona is expected to confirm his new agreement after his 18th birthday in July, at which point they could extend his contract until 2030.

There is little doubt that both Yamal and Barcelona want to continue their partnership. Fans can look forward to seeing the young talent flourish at the club for many years, with hopes that he continues to develop into one of football’s brightest stars.
