WAFCON 2024: Black Queens cruise past Tanzania to secure quarter-final spot

Ghana’s Black Queens delivered a dominant performance to beat Tanzania 4-1, sealing their place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Playing their final group match, the Queens extended their unbeaten run in group stages across four WAFCON editions. Head Coach Kim Lars Björkegren made three changes to the squad that drew 1-1 with Mali.

Princella Adubea, making her WAFCON debut, opened the scoring in the first half with a composed finish. But Tanzania hit back through Stumai Abdalla Athuman, whose long-range strike levelled the game just before halftime.

The Queens regained momentum in the second half. After Princess Maafo was fouled in the box, Alice Kusi confidently converted from the spot in the 63rd minute to restore Ghana’s lead.

The match saw a series of impactful substitutions, with Evelyn Badu coming on for the injured Adubea and Stella Nyamekye replacing Maafo to add attacking depth. A resulting free-kick, won after Nyamekye was fouled, was buried by Badu to extend the lead.

Just before the final whistle, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah sealed the victory with Ghana’s fourth goal, wrapping up a convincing performance.

With the win, the Black Queens progress to face Algeria in the quarter-finals, maintaining hopes of a deep run in the tournament.
