The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has launched a scathing critique of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, accusing it of deliberately sidelining the Volta Region in terms of infrastructure and social development.
According to him, the region endured years of neglect, stagnation, and what he described as politically motivated marginalisation under the erstwhile government. He stressed that if development were compared to telecommunication connectivity, the Volta Region would have been completely cut off under the NPP’s leadership.
Hon. Gunu made the remarks during a sod-cutting ceremony performed by Torgbui Tenuvi II for the construction of a modern two-storey Health Directorate Office Complex at Tokor in the Ketu South Municipality.
Addressing chiefs, community members, and stakeholders, the Regional Minister underscored the significance of the project in strengthening healthcare administration and improving coordination of health service delivery across the region.
“If development was a network, the Volta Region would have been out of reach under the NPP administration. For years, the region was treated as an afterthought when it came to national development priorities. Today, however, we are witnessing deliberate efforts to reconnect the region to accelerated growth and inclusive development,” he declared.
Hon. Gunu stated that while successive appeals were made during the previous administration to address critical infrastructural deficits in the region, little attention was given, leaving many health facilities and administrative structures in deplorable conditions.
He explained that the construction of the Health Directorate complex forms part of collaborative efforts involving stakeholders, development partners, private individuals, and non-governmental organisations aimed at bridging the developmental gap created by years of neglect and underinvestment.
The Minister further noted that the initiative reflects the determination of local leadership and development-oriented stakeholders to ensure that communities in the Volta Region are no longer left behind in Ghana’s development trajectory.
Hon. Gunu commended the leadership of the health sector in the region for their resilience and commitment despite what he described as years of operating under severe logistical and infrastructural constraints inherited from the previous administration.
He assured residents that government and stakeholders remain resolute in supporting interventions that directly improve livelihoods, healthcare delivery, and social services within the region.
The Regional Minister also issued a strong warning to contractors expected to execute the project, urging them to deliver quality work and strictly adhere to timelines, stressing that the people of the Volta Region would no longer accept delays or substandard execution of critical development projects.
The two-storey Health Directorate Office Complex, when completed, is expected to significantly enhance administrative efficiency, strengthen monitoring of public health programmes, and improve overall healthcare coordination within the Ketu South Municipality and the Volta Region as a whole.
The sod-cutting ceremony, led by Torgbui Tenuvi II, further highlights the pivotal role traditional authorities continue to play in championing community-driven development and filling gaps left by previous governance failures.
