Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has taken a three-week medical leave, effective April 7, 2025, to prioritize her health and recovery.
This decision follows her doctor’s advice and comes after recent health concerns led to her seeking treatment abroad, subsequent to initial care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre in Accra.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa reassured Ghanaians that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is recovering well and is expected to resume her duties soon.
Speaking in Lagos, Nigeria, on April 6, Ablakwa expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and prayers from citizens, both in Ghana and abroad, which he believes have contributed to her health progress.
Ablakwa also addressed rumors surrounding her health, dismissing them as “vicious and unGhanaian propaganda.”
He urged the public to focus on her resilience and achievements, highlighting her inspiring role as a trailblazer for young girls and women. “Our mother is doing well,” Ablakwa stated, quelling concerns about the Vice President’s health.
As the first female Vice President of Ghana, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has been a beacon of hope and inspiration for many. Her medical leave has sparked well-wishes from citizens, who are eagerly awaiting her return to duty.
