The Vice President of Ghana, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has donated 10,000 sanitary pads to traders at Kaneshie as part of the Free Sanitary Pad Program aimed at combating period poverty.
The donation was done on her behalf by Ernest Adomako Keon, the Member of Parliament for Okaikoi South.
According to him, the initiative forms part of nationwide efforts to support girls and women in managing their menstrual health.
The Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Program was launched by President John Dramani Mahama on April 24, 2025, and aims to provide free sanitary pads to over 2 million schoolgirls in Ghanaian public basic and second-cycle schools.
The program was supported by a GH¢292.4 million budget allocation; this initiative seeks to boost attendance, ensure menstrual dignity, and promote gender equality.
The project seeks to also reduce absenteeism and support the education of vulnerable girls by addressing menstrual hygiene challenges.
The initiative seeks to distribute 12.2 million packets of sanitary pads, with plans to install secured “pad holders” in school washrooms for privacy.
