The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has represented President John Dramani Mahama at the inauguration ceremony of General Mamadi Doumbouya, President of the Republic of Guinea, held in Conakry.

The ceremony brought together several Heads of State and Government, senior officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of regional and international organisations. The Vice President’s presence, according to the Ghanaian delegation, underscored Ghana’s commitment to strengthening long-standing regional and historical relations, as well as promoting peace and stability in West Africa.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, the Vice President congratulated President Doumbouya and reaffirmed Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Guinea to advance regional integration, boost trade, enhance security cooperation and deepen people-to-people relations.” – the statement said

Ghana further emphasized its support for collaboration within the frameworks of ECOWAS and the African Union, aimed at strengthening cooperation and ensuring lasting stability across the sub-region.

Background

Doumbouya was the instigator of the 5 September 2021 Guinean coup d’état, in which the president of Guinea, Alpha Condé, was detained.

Doumbouya issued a broadcast on state television declaring that his faction had dissolved the government and constitution. He also said that the “National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD), [was forced] to take its responsibility” after “the dire political situation of our country, the instrumentalization of the judiciary, the non-respect of democratic principles, the extreme politicization of public administration, as well as poverty and corruption.”

In justifying the military’s actions, Doumbouya quoted the former Ghanaian president Jerry Rawlings, who said that “if the people are crushed by their elites, it is up to the army to give the people their freedom.
