US Counterterrorism Chief Joe Kent Resigns Over Iran War Concerns

The Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Joseph Kent, has resigned from his position, citing strong opposition to the United States’ reported involvement in a war with Iran.

In a resignation letter addressed to former President Donald Trump, Mr. Kent stated that his decision takes immediate effect following what he described as deep personal reflection.

He indicated that he could no longer, in good conscience, support the ongoing conflict, arguing that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States. According to him, the war was influenced by external pressure, particularly from Israel and its allies within the United States.

Mr. Kent acknowledged his support for Mr. Trump’s earlier foreign policy positions, especially those aimed at avoiding prolonged military engagements. He referenced actions taken during the first administration, including the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and the fight against ISIS, as examples of decisive but limited military intervention.

However, he criticised what he described as a misinformation campaign by certain foreign and domestic actors, which he said contributed to pushing the United States toward war with Iran. He warned that such actions risk repeating past mistakes, including the Iraq War, which resulted in significant loss of American lives.

Drawing from his personal experience as a veteran, Mr. Kent also expressed concern about the human cost of war, stating that he could not support sending another generation of Americans into a conflict he believes does not serve the nation’s interests.

He urged Mr. Trump to reconsider the current course and reflect on the broader implications of the conflict, stressing that the decision taken now will shape the future of the United States.

Mr. Kent concluded his letter by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the administration and the nation.
