University senior staff call off strike after gov’t response

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has ended its nationwide strike. Members are expected to return to work on Friday, May 23.

The strike began on May 21. It was in response to the government’s delay in implementing a collective bargaining agreement signed in November 2024.

In a May 22 statement, SSA-UoG National Chairman George Garshong said the government had finally responded. The Ministry of Finance issued a letter authorizing the agreed payments. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has also instructed universities to start disbursing the funds.

“With this positive step, we direct all members to resume work,” Mr. Garshong announced.

He thanked the Minister of Education and Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai for their support. He also expressed appreciation to the media and union members for their continued backing.

The decision brings relief to university operations disrupted by the brief strike.
