Former Ghana School of Law Director, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has sharply criticized suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, arguing that she is now a victim of the same judicial system she once supervised but failed to reform.

His reaction comes after Justice Torkornoo’s first public comments on her impeachment proceedings, where she raised concerns about violations of natural justice, procedural fairness, and the lack of transparency under Article 146.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on June 25, Ansa-Asare described her public engagement as a misstep aimed at courting public sympathy. “She’s more than halfway through the process and now turns to the public, saying it’s unfair, but these proceedings aren’t for public debate,” he said.

He strongly dismissed her approach, “This isn’t a matter the public should be involved in. You don’t bring us into a constitutional process like this.”

Beyond her statement, Ansa-Asare aimed for Torkornoo’s record as Chief Justice, arguing that her experience now mirrors the failures of the very system she once oversaw. “She is admitting to supervising a broken system. Now she’s a victim of it. If the system is failing her, who should we blame?”

He added, “She’s been Chief Justice for three years. Did she not realize the judiciary was failing? And now that she’s aggrieved, the same flawed system is what she has to depend on. The message she should give Ghanaians is clear: the justice system is broken and needs urgent reform.”

Despite the backlash, Justice Torkornoo has vowed not to resign, opting instead to pursue legal channels to challenge the impeachment process, including what she describes as denial of legal representation, unclear charges, and intimidating investigative procedures.
