President John Mahama and Faure Gnassingbé

Ghanaian journalist and Pan-Africanist, Efo Korsi Senyo, has called on President John Mahama to use his diplomatic abilities to lobby his Togolese counterpart, Faure Gnassingbé, to step down as the President of the Togolese Council of Ministers.

In a Facebook post, Efo Senyo laments the continuous silence of the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, in the ongoing unrest in Ghana’s neighboring country, saying, “it appears ECOWAS – Cedeao and African Union only have a mandate and conscience to talk and sanction its member states if a government that is working against its citizens has been taken down.”

“Our brothers and sisters are being suffocated,” – Efo Korsi Senyo writes while asking President Mahama, to “Offer him [Faure Gnassingbé] a place in Ghana to relocate and retire gracefully and respectfully with dignity.”

Mr. President, use your diplomatic abilities to lobby Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé to step down in the peace and interest of Togo.

For him, President Mahama’s economic “achievements would benefit Ghanaians the more with relative peace and stability with your neighboring countries”

There is an ongoing unrest in Togo as a result of a constitutional amendment that has allowed Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé to be appointed the President of Council of Ministers and Head of Cabinet with all the executive powers. This office has no term limit and is not occupied through election by the citizens.

The amendment also created a ceremonial presidency, which is being occupied by an 86-year-old former opposition leader, Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové, who took office on May 3, 2025.

Mr. Tové is said to have contributed significantly to the controversial constitutional amendment allowing indefinite presidential rule for Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé.

The constitutional amendment, which shifted the presidential election from a public vote to appointment by the National Assembly, is the root cause of the ongoing unrest in that country.

Before his presidency, Savi de Tové served as Minister of Trade, Industry, and Handicrafts between 2005 and 2007 under Prime Minister Edem Kodjo

Dear President John Dramani Mahama,

We appeal to you to intervene in the ongoing unrest in #Togo. Ghana will be seriously affected should this conflict get out of hand.

Our brothers and sisters are being suffocated. However, it appears Ecowas – Cedeao and Ecowas – Cedeao only have a mandate and conscience to talk and sanction its member states if a government that is working against its citizens has been taken down.

Please, Mr. President, remember what Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah said of Ghana’s Independence Day – “Our independence is meaningless unless it’s linked to the total liberation of the African continent”.
Mr. President, your government’s achievements would benefit Ghanaians the more with relative peace and stability with your neighboring countries.

Mr. President, use your diplomatic abilities to lobby Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé to step down in the peace and interest of Togo.

Remind him that his father, Gnassingbé Eyadéma ruled Togo for 38 good years (1967 to 2005), and he, Faure, took over from his father and has been in power for the past 20years. Therefore, amending the constitution to make him the President of the Council of Ministers with all the executive powers and an indefinite term is unnecessary and catastrophic.

Remind him also that Prof. L. O. Lumbumba said, “A good dancer must know what to leave the stage; if you stay too long, you spoil it”.

It is time for him to leave the stage. Offer him a place in Ghana to relocate and retire gracefully and respectfully with dignity.

Yours concerns Ghanaian,
Efo Korsi Senyo
