Security has been reinforced in Ablekuma North as the Electoral Commission (EC) conducts a parliamentary rerun today, Friday, July 11, 2025, across 19 polling stations.
A heavy police presence has been noted at key locations, particularly former hotspots, as voters choose between NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie and NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn.
Awake News reports that deployment is especially high at sensitive locations like St. Peter Society Methodist Church, which was previously a collation centre. The church declined use for today’s exercise due to past damages during the chaotic 2024 elections.
To calm public anxiety, Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah confirmed that no military personnel would be deployed, placing full responsibility for security on the Ghana Police Service.
“There will be no military deployment,” Boamah assured. “The Ghana Police Service is trained to manage election security.”
The seat has been vacant since the December 7, 2024 general election after a court annulled results in the affected polling stations. Today’s rerun is expected to resolve the months-long legal battle and restore representation.
Both major party candidates have voiced optimism ahead of the vote, with voter turnout under close watch.
