Three contenders have picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia constituency ahead of an upcoming by-election.

The aspirants are:

  1. Henry Boakye, former Member of Parliament for the area
  2. Bernard Bediako Baidoo, the current NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary
  3. Erasmus Koney Ali

In line with the NDC’s election timetable, all aspiring candidates will undergo vetting on Thursday, July 31, with balloting scheduled immediately after. The primary is set for Monday, August 4, 2025.

This by-election follows the unfortunate passing of the sitting MP, creating a vacancy in the constituency.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reportedly selected Solomon Kwame Asumadu, CEO of Owuo Mining Company, as its candidate through consensus.

Regional party executives dismissed speculation that the late MP’s widow, Mrs. Mavis Kumi, would be nominated.

“Those reports are false and misleading,” said Jeff Konadu, NPP Eastern Regional Chairman.
