There’ll be no fuel allowance and utility bills payment for gov’t officials – John Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the next NDC government would cancel the provision of free fuel and other non-essential emolument enjoyed by government officials.

Speaking at a meeting with the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Mahama highlighted some tangible actions to save the country a lot of money.

He said cost-saving measures the next NDC administration would implement, include scrapping free DSTV subscriptions, utility bill payments and fuel allowances to government officials to ease the burden on the public purse.

Mr Mahama reiterated that the aforementioned goodies enjoyed by officials are a serious burden on the public purse and should be discouraged.

He said government officials should bear the cost of such services just as ordinary Ghanaians do.

“We will discontinue the payment of utility bills, fuel, DSTV, etc. as conditions of service for top government officials, directors, and the political class. We believe that people should take up paying their own electricity bills and water bills like every other Ghanaian does.

“Unless you are using a government vehicle or on government assignment, you should buy your fuel if you are using your own car. And so we are going to discontinue that,” Mahama stated.
