Tema and Takoradi ports will begin 24-hour operations from July 1, 2025, as part of the government’s new strategy to boost Ghana’s economic productivity.

President John Dramani Mahama made the announcement during the Ghana Horticulture Expo on Wednesday, highlighting the importance of logistics and exports in driving growth.

“We are implementing a game-changing strategy, the 24-hour economy, to unlock Ghana’s production potential across all sectors,” Mahama said. “From July 1, this policy goes into full operation.”

The initiative aims to boost productivity and revenue by enabling continuous economic activity, especially in agribusiness and exports. According to the president, the move will reduce post-harvest losses and improve the efficiency of transporting perishable goods like pineapples, vegetables, and herbs to global markets.

“This framework ensures faster production, processing, and logistics in horticulture,” he explained. “It allows perishable goods to move quickly from farms to shelves overseas, minimising losses and maximising value.”

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Agri-business, together with the Ministry of Transport, is working with the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Shippers’ Council to operationalise the 24-hour port services.
