The Minister of Communications, Sam George, has issued a strong warning to telecom companies. Those who fail to implement the new data package changes by July 1, 2025, will face sanctions.
The government has announced a 10% increase in data bundles, which must take effect by that date. According to the Minister, the deadline gives the telcos enough time to recalibrate and update their systems to reflect the agreed changes.
Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Sam George stated, “These increases will come at a considerable cost to the telcos. However, the deadline remains firm.”
The National Communications Authority (NCA) will monitor the changes and ensure full compliance. Where companies fail to comply, sanctions will apply immediately.
The new changes are as follows:
- AirtelTigo Ghana: 10% increase on all data offerings
- Telecel Ghana: 10% increase on all current data bundles
- MTN Ghana: 15% increase on all data bundles
Despite these changes, Sam George emphasized that he cannot single-handedly force price reductions. He noted, “The Minister cannot unilaterally order telcos to reduce data prices.”
However, he reassured the public of his commitment to transparency and collaboration. “I believe in leadership through engagement,” he said. “Recovering from eight years of mismanagement won’t happen in just four months.”
