Tamale bread bakers on two-day strike

Bread bakers in Tamale, Northern Region, are on a two-day strike in protest of the high cost of raw materials.

The action started on April 29, and according to Citi News report from Tamale, consumers said the situation would affect their breakfast and long journey commuters.

According to a notice, which read: ‘All bakeries and mixing centres are to note that, coming Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th April, will be striking days. For that matter, no bakery or mixing centre should operate. Failure to comply with this directive will come with severe consequences’.

Bread consumers and traders who saw or got a hint of the directive hoarded loaves of bread on Sunday, April 28, to avoid the consequences of the scarcity in the two days.

By this development, prices of bread are expected to marginally go high as the hoarders would capitalise on the strike action to make some ‘crazy’ gains until the bakers commence full production.

This is the second time in 2019 that bread bakers have gone on strike action, after the first one in Kumasi, where the producers of the yeast product complained on high cost of production.
