The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) says it is open to dialogue with the government but will not back down on its core demands.

The nurses began their strike on June 2, 2025, to protest the delayed implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement. This agreement covers their salaries, allowances, and working conditions.

Speaking on JoyNews Desk on June 9, GRNMA General Secretary David Tenkorang voiced frustration over the silence from government officials. “We’ve heard nothing from the sector minister or the Minister for Finance. As far as we’re concerned, the strike continues,” he said.

Tenkorang also responded to reports of a potential court injunction. “People say an injunction has been placed on us, but we’ve received no formal notice. So, nothing has changed. We’re still on track,” he added.

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission recently invited GRNMA to a meeting. After an emergency internal meeting, the association agreed to attend. “We’ll honour the invitation, but we know how this game is played. These last-minute meetings are a stall tactic,” Tenkorang said.

He accused the government of following a familiar pattern: rushing to the Labour Commission to seek an injunction whenever unions push for their rights.“This cycle keeps nurses and midwives in poverty,” he said.

Despite their doubts, GRNMA will join the talks but remains sceptical. “We’ll attend, but it seems like a ploy to serve us with an injunction. I doubt anything meaningful will come out of it. Still, we’ll give them a chance.” The meeting will take place at the Ministry of Finance and continue at the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

Tenkorang stressed the association’s capacity to negotiate effectively. “We have nine national executives. Even if two are unavailable, we have capable people ready to act,” he noted.

He ended by reaffirming GRNMA’s resolve to secure better conditions for nurses and midwives. “We’re open to discussion. But if nothing changes, we’ll keep fighting.”
