St. Joseph Basic School wins maiden CFF-GH debate competition

The St. Joseph R/C Basic School at Fise in the Greater Accra Region, emerged winner of the first round of Junior High Schools Debate competition organised by a non- governmental organization, Community Focus Foundations Ghana (CFF-GH).

The competition which took place in the Ga West Municipal Assembly Hall, was organized in partnership with Vision Leaders Ghana (YVLG), Scaleup Future, Kamal Education Foundation, Community Connect Network, Ako Foundation and the Ga West Municipal Education Directorate, with the aim of equipping the students with presentation skills to enhance public speaking and to also mentor them to develop strong communication skills to become dynamic and assertive leaders in society.

The event on the theme, ‘Raising Leaders Through Public Speaking’, was competed by the Amansama M/A basic school, St. Joseph R/C Basic School, Sacred Heart Anglican school and Fowmag Islamic basic school, all in the Amasaman Circuit of the Ga West Municipal Assembly. Mr. Bernard Kwaku Gidiglo, Mad. Frantiska Hoffman, Bishop Nathaniel Rudolph and Mr. Paa Willie Quentin were the judges for the competition.

The victory means, St. Joseph R/C Basic School and Amasaman Basic School, have progressed to the semi-final stage of the competition, which would be held on a later date against winners of the 1st round from other circuits, within the Municipality.

The participating schools went ‘for or against’ the motion, “Sex Education is Causing more Harm than Good to Ghanaian students”.

The Executive Director of Young Visionary Leaders, Mr. Joseph Tettey Afangbe, who delivered a speech to launch the project noted that, public speaking is commonly the most pervasive fears in Ghana. And so therefore, there is the need to collectively take steps towards addressing speech-related anxieties among students.

“… public speaking is commonly said to be one of the most pervasive fears in Ghana, Africa and the world at large”.

“The need to take collective effort geared towards addressing speech related anxieties among students in building self-confidence for improved academic work, is now more imperative”, he added.

He took the opportunity to call on Civil Society Organizations, sector players, development partners, corporate organizations to come on board to support the course, of achieving the Sustainable Development Goal Four, of ‘Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’.

The event was graced by the Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, Clement Nii Lamptey Wilkinson.
