Sharks Quiz Orders Tie-Breaker Rerun After Controversial Quarterfinal Decision

The organizers of the Sharks Quiz have ordered a rerun of the tie-breaker between Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) and St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO) following a disputed decision during their quarterfinal clash.

In a press statement dated March 19, 2026, the Quiz Academic Board explained that the contest had reached a tie-breaker stage after a fiercely competitive encounter. Both schools failed to correctly answer the initial Science and Mathematics questions, leading to an English question.

The question posed was: “In Greek tragedy, what term describes the moment of highest tension in the plot?”

KETASCO answered “Climax,” a response widely accepted in literary analysis as the point of highest tension in a narrative. However, the answer was not accepted at the time, allowing AUGUSCO to proceed to the next question and ultimately be declared winners.

Following the contest, KETASCO lodged a formal protest, prompting a detailed review by the Quiz Jury and Academic Board. The review examined standard literary definitions and interpretations within Greek tragedy and narrative structure.

The Board acknowledged that while “Peripeteia” refers specifically to a reversal of fortune in Greek tragedy, “Climax” is broadly recognized as the moment of highest tension in a plot.

Based on this clarification, the Academic Board ruled that KETASCO’s answer was valid and should have been accepted.

To ensure fairness and uphold the integrity of the competition, the Board has directed that the tie-breaker be rerun on Monday, March 23, 2026, to conclusively determine the winner between the two schools.

The organizers commended both KETASCO and AUGUSCO for their discipline, performance, and sportsmanship throughout the contest, reaffirming their commitment to fairness, academic integrity, and high adjudication standards.
