Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, has been appointed Chair of the newly inaugurated Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

His appointment, made by President John Dramani Mahama, was confirmed during an inauguration ceremony held at the Ministry of the Interior in Accra on Wednesday, June 26. The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, presided over the event.

The Governing Council is tasked with providing strategic direction and oversight for the GIS, a key institution responsible for border security, migration control, and national development.

Rev. Dr. Wengam, who was elected head of the Assemblies of God Church in 2022, brings a strong background in governance and public service. He previously served on the Ghana Prisons Service Council, eventually becoming its chair. During his tenure, he spearheaded reform initiatives such as Project Efiase and helped drive infrastructure improvements between 2009 and 2013.

He holds a degree in Administration (Marketing) from the University of Ghana, a Master’s in Theology, and a Diploma in Christian Clinical Counselling from the International Theological Seminary in the U.S.

His new role at the GIS is expected to strengthen the institution’s leadership as it faces growing demands around border management, regional security, and global migration trends.
