Despite widespread social media chatter about falling cement prices, especially for GHACEM 32R, retailers across Accra say otherwise. Market checks show prices remain unchanged, with GHACEM 32R still selling at around GHS 120 per bag.

The cedi’s recent appreciation raised hopes that consumer goods like cement would become more affordable. However, traders say price reductions have yet to materialize at retail outlets.

“There hasn’t been any price reduction. I even ordered bags at GHS 105 and haven’t received them yet, so the talk online is just hearsay,” said Atta Boafo, a cement retailer.

Another trader, David Nartey, added, “I received my supply today. The factory price was GHS 120, and I’m retailing it at GHS 130. Nothing has changed.”

Retailers blame the steady or rising prices on high transport costs, expensive raw materials, and ongoing supply chain issues. They argue these factors continue to override any potential relief from the cedi’s gains.

“There’s still a shortage of clinker,” one seller explained. “Unless supply improves, and currency stability continues, we won’t see any real price cuts.”

Many traders are urging the government to address clinker supply challenges to enable cement prices to drop meaningfully for consumers.
