Re-close down schools – GNAT appeals to government

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has joined calls by some institutions asking the government for reclosure of schools just a day after reopening.

According to the association, until Government makes available Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for various schools as promised by the President, schools should remain closed.

The association’s President Madam Philippa Larson, said after touring some schools to mark their reopening yesterday after a long break meant to deal with the fast spread of the virus, she noticed that most students were not wearing face masks as many were without hand sanitizers and the disturbing aspect is that most are not obeying the Covid protocols with respect to social distancing.

President Akufo-Addo in his recent address to the nation on measures taken to deal with the spread of the Coronavirus said the government has a support system in place for the schools to ensure the safety of students with the resumption of schools.

The supports Includes the fumigation and disinfecting of schools and other institutions across the country, he also promised to equip all schools and students with the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and isolation centers to deal with any cases of COVID-19 positives.

However, in a trending Social Media picture, a pupil was seen using a piece of paper as a nose mask in a rather disturbing manner.

This has raised concern from many parents and some citizens on social media asking if the various schools especially those in rural communities where these protective gears are not easy to afford will be safe for children to study.

Ghana’s Coronavirus cases as we speak;
Active cases: 1924
New cases: 351 with 352 deaths recorded so far.

The statistics suggest there is an alarming increase in positive cases which should be a great worry to everyone.
In the last 48 hours alone, some very influential nationals are reported to have died from the virus.
