A severe rainstorm has displaced more than 30 residents of Ave Dzalele, a community in the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region, leaving several houses damaged, authorities have confirmed.
The incident, which occurred earlier this week, destroyed homes and properties, but no casualties were recorded, according to an official communique issued and posted on the verified Facebook page of the DCE of the area.
Following the disaster, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akatsi North, Hon. Bless Kodjo Katamani, together with the Presiding Member, Hon. Patrick Kwame Ahiabu, NDC Constituency Chairman, Hon. Dr. Richard Awudza, and other constituency executives, visited the affected community to sympathise with victims and assess the situation.
During the visit, Hon. Katamani advised residents to plant more trees as windbreaks and consider climate-resilient housing solutions to reduce the impact of future rainstorms and related disasters.
Ave Dzalele, according to the DCE, has a history of disaster-related incidents. Records show that a similar rainstorm in 2016 displaced over 330 people, while another incident in 2015 affected about 87 residents.
In response to the latest disaster, the DCE has directed the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to conduct a full assessment of the damage to facilitate the provision of relief items to affected families and to recommend preventive measures.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to support displaced residents, with a focus on sustainable solutions and strengthening community resilience against future climate-related disasters.
