Prof. Oquaye slams Ghana’s CJ petition process as “ridiculous” and unfair

Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, Ghana’s former Speaker of Parliament and a respected constitutional scholar, has weighed in forcefully on the intensifying debate over the petition process seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In a exclusive interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Prof. Oquaye criticized Ghanaians who are now questioning the constitutional framework, even though the same structures have been in place for decades without protest.

He went further to challenge the legitimacy of the panel responsible for adjudicating such high-stakes petitions.

According to him, the fact that two Supreme Court judges can be overruled by three civilian members who may lack legal training and that their majority decision is final with no possibility of appeal, raises serious concerns about justice and fairness.

Prof. Oquaye described this as a “ridiculous” situation and questioned whether anyone would willingly submit themselves to such a process.

Interestingly, despite his close ties to the ruling New Patriotic Party, Prof. Oquaye’s remarks suggest a level of independence, as he appears to step back from his party’s growing calls for reinstating the Chief Justice, focusing instead on the broader flaws within the system itself.
