The People’s National Party (PNP) has raised concerns about President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to women’s empowerment, following reports that he is considering the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
In a statement, PNP Chairperson Janet Nabla criticized the president for focusing on ousting key officials rather than fulfilling his campaign promises, particularly his pledge to implement the Affirmative Action Law and ensure 30% female representation in government.
The PNP expressed disappointment, arguing that Mahama’s actions undermine his credibility and divert attention from his earlier commitments to gender equality.
The issue stems from three petitions calling for Justice Torkonoo’s removal, which Mahama has referred to the Council of State for review, in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
While the details of the petitions remain undisclosed, the move has set in motion a constitutional process that could lead to further scrutiny of the Chief Justice’s position.
