Parliament didn’t approve US$660m for Tema motorway expansion – Agbodza

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adaklu Constituency in the Volta Region, Kwame Agbodza, has raised concerns about the inflated cost of the Tema Motorway expansion project.

According to the Minority Chief Whip, Parliament approved only US$338 million for the project, which is scheduled to begin this month. He argued that the government cannot increase the approved budget without the express consent of Parliament.

“Parliament DID NOT APPROVE $660m for this project. We ONLY APPROVED $338m for this project. No one has the right to VARY this project without AUTHORISATION from Parliament,” Mr. Agbodza, wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The over 60-year-old motorway, which was the first in Africa, has been deteriorating for years.

On Monday, August 26, President Akufo-Addo broke ground for the commencement of the project, which will expand the motorway into a ten-lane highway.
