Over 60 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament on Thursday visited the Nima office of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to express their backing for his presidential bid.

Dr. Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate and former Vice President, received the delegation amid cheers and cameras. Their visit is widely seen as a strong show of internal support ahead of the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.

Party Primaries Set for January 2026

The NPP’s National Executive Council (NEC) has fixed Saturday, January 31, 2026, for the party’s presidential primary. This decision followed a meeting on June 17 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, where party leaders deliberated on key constitutional reforms proposed by the Prof. Mike Oquaye committee.

Due to the absence of National Chairman Stephen Ntim, the session was chaired by First Vice Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey. Top figures like Dr. Bawumia, General Secretary Justin Kodua, Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako were all present.

Although nominations for the flagbearer race are yet to open, three aspirants, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, have already declared their intent to run.

Post-Election Review Still Unreleased

The NPP lost both the presidential and parliamentary elections in December 2024. In response, the party formed a committee, led by Prof. Mike Oquaye, to investigate the causes of the defeat. Though the final report hasn’t been published, media leaks suggest that the performance of former President Akufo-Addo, ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and Bawumia’s candidacy played roles in the electoral outcome.
