Former Asante Kotoko player Charles Taylor says his former club can only brag about being a big club but without top-performing players.
According to the former Ghanaian international, most of the players are not up to the standard of the club, arguing that only 30 percent of the current crop of players deserve to don the club’s jersey.
Kotoko has seen a drastic decline in their performances recently; the situation is gradually getting worse under interim coach Prince Owusu.
Speaking on Angel TV, Charles Taylor, who played for the club between 2003 and 2007, believes the club’s present predicament has to do with player quality and squad depth.
“Asante Kotoko is a big club without big players; only 30% of the current players deserve to wear the team’s jersey,” he said.
Former coach Karim Zito was shown the exit door in early February following a series of inconsistencies in winning games, despite guiding Kotoko to win four titles in the space of one year.
Zito clinched the MTN FA Cup, President’s Cup, the FA Cup, and the Champions of Champions Cup and took the Toyota Cup in South Africa.
Following his exit, the mishap of the club has not changed under Prince Owusu after steering the affairs of the club in his first three games.
The interim manager has seen one win in three games, including a 1-2 home defeat to rivals Heart of Oak, a 0-0 goalless draw with Vison FC, and a 2-0 victory over Young Apostles.
With the title hopes gradually slipping, Asante Kotoko will need to find their rhythm and return to winning ways to close up the gap on leaders Medeama with 46 points, as the Porcupine Warriors occupy the fourth spot with 39 points after 24 rounds of matches.
With pressure already mounting on Prince Owusu to deliver, he remains optimistic about his future with the club, though some fans are worried and already calling for his exit.
The Porcupine Warriors will travel to the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex in Naeligu to face in-form Karela United on matchday 25 on March 3.
Karela United remains one of the top teams to beat at home, having secured three consecutive wins in their last four matches, ending one in a stalemate.
