Former National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has criticized Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) for their selective campaign on the winner-takes-all system.

In an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat, the former Eastern Regional Minister said, “Unfortunately, when NDC was in power, various non-governmental organizations and think tanks, religious bodies, and others were all speaking against winner-takes-all. At the moment, NDC is in opposition [and] everybody is quiet, not talking about the winner-takes-all again.”

Dr. Ofosu- Ampofo emphasized on the need for a hybrid system which would allow members of the opposition parties to hold significant positions, citing Nigeria and India as clear examples.

He was of the view that the winner-takes-all system is “inimical to the sociopolitical development of our country” and argued that “we need to take a second look at it.”

As Ghana continues to strengthen its democracy, Dr Ofosu- Ampofo stressed on the importance of re-examining the winner-takes-all system and consider alternative models, which according to him, would promote greater inclusivity and accountability
