Nyitawuta community in Akatsi North

Residents of Nyitawuta, a predominantly farming community in the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region, are appealing for urgent government intervention over an abandoned rural electrification project and the deteriorated state of their only access road.

The electrification project, which began under the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was expected to bring relief and development to the community. However, years after electricity poles were erected and cables partially installed, the contractor abandoned the site, leaving Nyitawuta in darkness and dashed hopes.

Beyond the lack of electricity, residents say their situation is worsened by the poor condition of their road, which has been left to deteriorate. According to the community, the road becomes nearly impassable during the rainy season, cutting them off from nearby towns, markets, schools, and health facilities.

As a farming community, the absence of basic infrastructure has taken a heavy toll on livelihoods. Farmers lament that transporting their produce to market is costly and difficult, resulting in post-harvest losses and low incomes. Schoolchildren struggle to study at night without electricity, while small businesses that depend on power have failed to take off.

“We feel forgotten,” a resident said emotionally. “We feed the nation, yet we live without light and good roads. When it rains, we are completely cut off. All we ask for is fairness and attention.”

The people of Nyitawuta are therefore appealing to the government led by President John Dramani Mahama to bring the contractor back to the site or re-award the electrification project, while also addressing the poor state of the community’s road network.

Residents believe that completing the rural electrification project and rehabilitating the road will not only restore hope but also unlock economic opportunities, improve access to education and healthcare, and give Nyitawuta the dignity it deserves as a contributing farming community in the Volta Region.
