Leading members of the opposition, New Patriotic Party (NPP), were noticeably absent when the party held its national thanksgiving service following its recent presidential primary.
Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, and Abetifi MP, Bryan Acheampong both key contenders in the flagbearer race were not seen at the event, which was organised to express gratitude to God for what party leadership described as a peaceful and successful internal electoral process.
The thanksgiving ceremony, attended by national executives, clergy, party faithful and supporters, forms part of efforts by the NPP to foster unity after a keenly contested primary that elected former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate.
While the absence of the two prominent figures sparked conversations among sections of the party’s grassroots and political observers, there has been no official communication from either Mr. Agyapong or Dr. Acheampong explaining their non-attendance as of the time of filing this report.
Party officials who addressed the gathering emphasised reconciliation and cohesion, urging members to close ranks and work collectively towards the NPP’s future electoral prospects.
Both Mr. Agyapong and Dr. Acheampong played significant roles in the just-ended primary, commanding substantial support among delegates and contributing to what analysts described as one of the party’s most competitive internal contests in recent years.
Political watchers say sustained engagement among all former aspirants will be crucial to maintaining party unity ahead of the next general election cycle.
The NPP leadership has repeatedly called on members to rally behind the elected flagbearer and focus on rebuilding consensus after the contest.
