Professor of Finance and Economics at the University of Ghana, Godfred A. Bokpin, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to deeply reflect on its internal election strategy as it prepares to select a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 21, Prof. Bokpin expressed concerns about the party’s decision to elect its presidential candidate before completing elections for polling stations, constituencies, and regional executives.
“A strong party with solid structures is more likely to produce a strong leader,” he noted. “Traditionally, the NPP has built its leadership from the grassroots up, and reversing that order may not serve its best interests.”
He argued that skipping the foundational steps could compromise the unity and strength of the party ahead of the national polls.
“It appears they want to elect the flagbearer before filling the lower-level leadership positions. I’m not sure this approach will work in the party’s favour,” he added.
While acknowledging that the NPP’s constitution may legally support the decision, Prof. Bokpin cautioned against relying solely on legal justification without considering political realities.
“The law may permit it, but using it to solve every issue can blindside you from broader implications. The party must ensure the chosen flagbearer is widely accepted and can work effectively with existing structures.”
He also questioned the motivation behind the rushed process, suggesting it could be aimed at favouring a candidate whose popularity may decline over time.
“There’s a suspicion, perhaps unfounded, that this strategy benefits a specific candidate. If that’s the case, it could trigger disunity within the party.”
Prof. Bokpin concluded by urging the NPP to prioritize internal harmony. “At the end of the day, the party needs every faction aligned and working together to succeed in 2028,” he said.
