The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has approved a significant reform by making the position of Director of Communications an elected role, rather than an appointed one.

The decision was endorsed at the party’s National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
Party leaders say the move will empower the grassroots to choose a representative who can authentically communicate their concerns, while curbing the perception of favoritism in appointments.
“This change addresses long-standing dissatisfaction among party communicators over perceived biases in appointments,” a party official stated.
However, the Deputy Communications Directors will continue to be appointed positions, according to the party’s revised guidelines.
Meanwhile, the NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, used the occasion to call for an end to internal bickering and factional attacks.
“Let us stop the internal attacks now. The NDC is our opponent, not ourselves,” Dr. Bawumia said in his address.
He emphasized that unity and discipline are essential if the party hopes to return to power in the 2028 general elections.
He urged members to channel criticism through appropriate platforms and avoid public spats that weaken party cohesion.
Addressing recent violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun, Dr. Bawumia issued a stern warning:
“I call on the President to prosecute the perpetrators of the violence. If not, we will do so when we assume power in 2029. The elephant does not forget.”
His remarks followed growing concerns over internal party tensions and grassroots dissatisfaction in certain constituencies.
As the NPP gears up for the flagbearer election in January 2026, the party is working to resolve internal rifts and refocus on building a united front to challenge the opposition.
