General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has assured party members that the NPP has a strong legal team prepared to defend any officials facing court action.

Speaking after the release of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (popularly known as Chairman Wontumi) from EOCO custody on Monday, June 2, Mr. Frimpong emphasized that the party was ready for any legal battles.

“The NPP will demonstrate that we have solid lawyers to defend our officials,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, also confirmed that all bail conditions had been met, leading to his client’s release.

“Chairman Wontumi has been released. He is here with me,” he told reporters outside the EOCO office, where party supporters gathered and celebrated with chants and slogans.

Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, and granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties, both to be justified.

Although EOCO has not officially charged him, Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem Sai revealed via Facebook that Wontumi is under investigation for suspected money laundering, fraud, and causing financial loss to the state.

He added that a parallel investigation involving international law enforcement is underway, targeting a wider organized crime network.

“The criminal investigation is running concurrently with asset recovery processes,” Dr. Sai stated, adding that authorities are working to prevent the dissipation of suspected illicit assets.
