Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has denied claims that the party’s national leadership is coordinating public endorsements for any aspirant ahead of the 2026 presidential primaries.
In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, June 23, Haruna responded to speculation following the recent endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). He emphasized that the national leadership had no involvement in the move.
“People are saying it, but it’s just a rumour. And I can tell you, with authority, that the party leadership certainly does not have a hand in anybody’s declaration,” he said.
Haruna acknowledged that individual party members are free to express support for any aspirant. However, he urged all members to observe party rules and conduct such declarations respectfully.
“We are dealing with adults. They have the right to express their positions, but those expressions must follow the party’s internal rules,” he added.
He reaffirmed the leadership’s neutrality in the lead-up to the primaries:
“We are not backing any group to go around making declarations. The party leadership is neutral at this point.”
His remarks followed a press conference at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, where the Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia publicly declared their support for the former Vice President as the NPP’s preferred flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
