The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will challenge the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
At a press conference on Thursday, July 3, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong described the EC’s directive as “disingenuous and unlawful.” The party insists that the decision lacks legal backing and undermines the results already recorded.
“We have given firm instructions to our lawyers to proceed to court to challenge this unlawful, capricious, whimsical, arbitrary, and self-serving directive from the Electoral Commission,” the party announced.
According to the NPP, after tallying results from all 281 polling stations in December 2024, its parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh, won with 34,613 votes, narrowly defeating NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn, who secured 34,199 votes.
The party also referenced earlier statements from Deputy EC Commissioner Samuel Tettey, who told Parliament that only three polling station results were left to be collated, not 19. They argue that the EC has shifted its position without justification.
“Why is the EC suddenly speaking of 19 polling stations? How did they arrive at that figure, especially when those results had already been approved by party agents?” the NPP questioned.
The controversy stems from missing original pink sheets from some polling stations. The EC initially attempted to complete collation using scanned copies approved by party agents. However, the NDC opposed that move, demanding a rerun instead, citing the lack of verification by the Presiding Officers.
Despite earlier resistance to a rerun, the EC has scheduled new polls in 19 stations for July 11. The NPP insists this move violates a High Court order directing the EC to finalize collation using available results from the three pending stations.
The party is calling on the EC to uphold the rule of law and ensure the will of the people in Ablekuma North is respected.
