Senior New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Nana Akomea, has endorsed the decision by the party’s National Council to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, describing it as a necessary move to restore unity.
In a Facebook post on June 19, Akomea said, “The decision by the NPP National Council by overwhelming majority to hold the flagbearer elections first, and quickly, is just what the NPP needs at this time.”
He argued that the party cannot truly unite until the flagbearer contest concludes. “The party will never close ranks in unity until the flagbearer election is over. That is fact.”

Akomea, a known supporter of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, cited ongoing tensions and distractions caused by the internal competition for leadership as reasons why the primaries should not be delayed.
He explained that over the past few months in opposition, NPP news coverage had largely been dominated by flagbearership politics, from religious undertones in campaign messages to the near disruption of “Thank You” tours.
Even recent incidents, like the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi, were perceived through the lens of flagbearer rivalry, he noted. “This rivalry runs deep, from polling station elections to national executive contests. The longer it drags, the more it risks tearing the party apart.”
Akomea warned that prolonged in-fighting could stall efforts to rebuild after the party’s 2024 election defeat. “We can’t afford another two years of acrimony, accusations, counter-accusations, insults, and backbiting. The quicker we elect a leader, the quicker we restore focus.”
He concluded by praising the National Council’s decision, stressing the need for leadership, stability, and a unified front ahead of the next general elections. “Bravo to our National Council,” he wrote.
