The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special ceremony on Friday, November 14, in Accra, highlighting two decades of regulatory excellence and significant contributions to Ghana’s petroleum downstream sector.

The event, themed “20 Years of Fueling Ghana’s Progress: The Journey, the Legacy and the Future,” brought together former and current Board Chairpersons, Chief Executives, management, and staff of the Authority.

In his welcome address, NPA Chief Executive Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo Esq. expressed deep gratitude to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, whose vision led to the Authority’s creation at a time when petroleum regulation was merely a department within a ministry.

He also acknowledged early pioneers like Professor Ivan Addae-Mensah and Dr. John Attafuah, whose foundational work laid the groundwork for the Authority’s current achievements.

Mr. Tameklo emphasized that the anniversary was not only a time to celebrate successes but also a moment for thoughtful reflection on the Authority’s mission to ensure efficiency, fairness, and strong consumer protection.

“For 20 years, the NPA has remained dedicated to its vision and mission,” he stated, noting that the regulatory reforms implemented by the Authority have significantly enhanced Ghana’s downstream petroleum market.

He stressed that as the global energy landscape evolves, the NPA must continue to promote energy efficiency, support Ghana’s energy transition agenda, and foster innovation in service delivery. He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to collaborating with President John Dramani Mahama’s government to maintain progress in the sector.

In his keynote address, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, praised former Board Chairs and Chief Executives for their roles in establishing Ghana as a leader in downstream petroleum governance. He also commended the current CEO, calling him “a young, smart, dynamic, intelligent leader” who is excelling in the downstream sector.

Hon. Jinapor highlighted the success of petroleum price deregulation, describing it as one of the most transparent pricing systems in the country. He noted that this pricing mechanism allows any Ghanaian to estimate fuel prices based on world market prices and exchange rates—two key factors affecting price changes.

The Minister underscored the importance of ongoing innovation and adaptation, especially with the global shift towards renewable energy. He mentioned that Ghana currently has the highest number of electric vehicles (EVs) in Africa, with more privately-operated EV charging stations emerging across the nation.
