The North Tongu District Assembly has disbursed a total of GHC127,446 to support 50 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the areas of education, medical care and caregiver assistance, in line with the national disability support framework.
The disbursement, covering September to November 2025, was carried out under two groups with the first group supporting 13 beneficiaries with GHC38,946, covering September–October, while the second group representing November, assisted 37 beneficiaries with GHC88,500.
Additionally, five beneficiaries received educational support amounting to GHC13,901, while eight received a total of GHC25,045 for group one members.
Again, three persons supported with GHC7,000 for education for group two members, 16 beneficiaries receiving GHC41,500 for medical care, and 18 caregivers receiving GHC40,000.
Mr Albert Xenyo, the District Officer of the Department of Social Welfare, speaking at the presentation, said the support was aimed at strengthening the wellbeing of differently abled persons by easing household and medical burdens.
“The aim of today’s session is to empower our people through the PWD Fund so they can cater for their needs at home and within their families. With the new guidelines, we have identified caregivers of children with multiple disabilities and supported them separately for the first time. Eighteen caregivers are receiving financial support to ease the heavy responsibility of caring for their children,” he explained.
He added that the Assembly’s disability support programme would continue throughout the year, with additional allocations to be made under the empowerment component of the Disability Fund.
The District Coordinating Director, Mr Emmanuel Laryea Tetteh, reiterated the Assembly’s legal mandate to support differently abled persons, noting that the three support categories—education, medical and caregiver assistance—remain critical to improving livelihoods.
“We are required by law to support the differently abled. Today, we are assisting those in school with fees, handling medical bills, and supporting caregivers. After this segment, we will follow up with empowerment support for those engaged in enterprises, based on proper assessment of their real needs,” he said.
He stressed that all beneficiaries undergo verification to ensure they receive items and funding appropriate to their circumstances.
The Chairman of the Disability Fund Management Committee, Mr Ernest Adika, expressed satisfaction with the expanded reach of this year’s support.
“We have many disabled persons across North Tongu, yet only a few used to benefit repeatedly. So together with the committee, we resolved to go deeper and ensure fairness. We selected applicants who had urgent needs and had not received support before,” he noted.
Mr Adika urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly, emphasising that strict follow-ups would be conducted to prevent misuse.
“Some have previously sold items given to them, but this time we will monitor closely. The funds and items must be used for the exact purposes granted,” he cautioned.
Beneficiaries lauded the government and pledged to utilise the funds purposefully.
