Children from the mountain-top communities of Leklebi Wobey, Blimado, Alieta, and Asotordzi are compelled to climb the tall and difficult Wobey Mountain daily, trekking about four miles before accessing the nearest school.
The exhausting journey exposes the children to physical danger, fatigue, and harsh weather conditions, significantly affecting school attendance and academic performance. Parents say the long and difficult climb has discouraged many children from schooling altogether, while others have been forced to relocate to neighboring towns to enable their children to continue their education.
Community members describe the situation as a major barrier to education and have renewed calls on government and stakeholders to urgently provide a functional basic school within the Wobey area to ease the burden on the children and promote access to education in the mountain communities.
