The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered the Divisional Union of the National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) to end its ongoing strike without delay, labelling the action as unlawful.
In a statement issued Friday, June 27, the Commission said its ruling followed a hearing held the day before with union leaders and government representatives. Present at the session were officials from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Labour, and the NIA.
The NLC revealed that the strike was declared by the NIA’s Divisional Union without proper authorisation from the National Union, a procedural breach. The National Union admitted the error and apologized, acknowledging that only national bodies have the legal mandate to declare industrial action.
Although the union claimed to be working to resolve the situation, the NLC said those steps were inadequate. It emphasized that the strike must cease immediately.
A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for July 1 at 1:30 p.m. to assess compliance and review progress on ongoing negotiations.
