The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP) has commended the government for reinstating September 21 as “Founder’s Day” to honor Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The restoration came via an Executive Instrument issued on June 26, 2025, by President John Dramani Mahama. This reverses a 2019 decision by the Akufo-Addo administration that moved the holiday to August 4.
KNMP: Nkrumah Remains Peerless
In a statement signed by Acting Executive Director Dr. Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, the park described the decision as a “victory for truth and historical justice.” He emphasized that while others contributed to Ghana’s independence journey, Nkrumah’s leadership remains unparalleled.
“This is not just a symbolic act,” the statement said. “It’s a reaffirmation of Nkrumah’s undisputed legacy as the founder of Ghana.”
The park quoted a tribute from former Guinean President Sekou Touré in 1972: “Those who attempted to humiliate him only succeeded in glorifying him.”
Call for Legal Safeguards
KNMP also urged Parliament and the Constitutional Review Committee to legally entrench the Founder’s Day holiday to prevent future political interference or revisionism. “We call on the government and lawmakers to enshrine this date in law, safeguarding it from distortion and securing Nkrumah’s place in history.”
Public Encouraged to Explore Legacy
The park invited Ghanaians to visit the Accra memorial site and reflect on Dr. Nkrumah’s pivotal role in the nation’s fight for independence.
