The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a container loaded with 299 cartons of tramadol hydrochloride tablets at the Tema Port, leading to the arrest of nine suspects.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the container, which had not been duly declared, contained approximately 146,932,000 tablets of tramadol hydrochloride concealed among other goods.
Officials said the interception forms part of intensified surveillance and intelligence-led operations aimed at combating the illicit importation of restricted pharmaceutical products into the country.
Customs officers, acting on a tip-off, conducted a thorough inspection of the container and uncovered the undeclared consignment. The suspects, believed to be connected to the shipment, were arrested to assist with investigations.
Authorities have described the seizure as one of the significant interceptions in recent times, noting that the uncontrolled circulation of tramadol poses serious public health and security concerns.
The seized consignment has been secured, while the suspects are expected to be handed over to the appropriate investigative agencies for further action.
The GRA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders and preventing the entry of harmful and illicit substances into the country.
