Mr. Stephen Fenuku, the former South Tongu Constituency NDC Youth Organizer, has voiced grave concerns regarding the frequent appearance of the South Tongu District in national news for fraudulent activities involving the youth.
Speaking as the Guest of Honour at the maiden Toklokpo Dunenyo Annual Fundraising event in the Hlevi-Toklokpo Electoral Area, Mr. Fenuku described the current trend as a worrying situation that requires immediate and decisive intervention to protect the district’s image.
His remarks come at a time when the Ghana Police Service has intensified its crackdown on cyber-related crimes in Ghana. The arrests of Gideon Awudi – 25, Edem Soku – 33, and Judith Soku – 31, who were apprehended in Sogakope and Dabala for allegedly creating fake social media accounts to impersonate high-ranking officials, including the Speaker of Parliament of Ghana and the Inspector-General of Police.
Beyond impersonation, the district has seen a rise in mobile money scams, credit card fraud, and sophisticated online food delivery schemes where criminals set up fake platforms for popular brands as KFC and Pizzaman to defraud unsuspecting customers.
Mr. Fenuku acknowledged that while Toklokpo remains a peaceful and law-abiding community, the district’s reputation is being compromised by non-residents who migrate into the area. He observed that these individuals often rent local houses to secretly use as operational bases for their illegal cyber activities, hidden from public view.
”Toklokpo is a good and peaceful community,” Mr. Fenuku stated. “Most of these bad acts are being carried out by individuals who come from elsewhere, hire rooms secretly, and engage in these crimes behind closed doors.”
To combat this infiltration, he called for a renewed spirit of “voluntarism charisma,” urging all residents to take an active interest in the security of their neighborhoods by collaborating closely with the Police and local Assembly Members to flush out these bad actors.
He emphasized that eradicating these criminal elements from the various communities requires a collective effort, starting with property owners being more discerning about who they lease rooms to.
Mr. Fenuku believes the people of South Tongu can reclaim the district’s integrity and protect the local youth from the negative influences of cybercrime, through a culture of vigilance and reporting suspicious movements.
