Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will use its new two-thirds parliamentary majority to initiate sweeping reforms aimed at transforming Ghana’s governance and development trajectory.

His remarks came after the swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn as the new MP for Ablekuma North, following a rerun that gave the NDC an additional seat and brought its total in Parliament to 184, alongside 4 independent MPs. This development further weakens the New Patriotic Party (NPP), now holding just 86 seats.

“The NDC, for the first time in a very long time, has two-thirds in this House,” Ayariga stated.
“With this number, we can do many good things… We can carry out significant constitutional reforms to make this country better.”

Ayariga assured Ghanaians that the NDC would not abuse its supermajority, echoing President John Dramani Mahama’s earlier pledge to govern responsibly and inclusively.

“We will use this number wisely and ensure it benefits all Ghanaians,” he emphasized.

Focus on Constitutional and Institutional Reforms

The NDC has hinted at a legislative push to review Ghana’s 30-year-old constitution, along with broader legal and institutional changes.

With a two-thirds majority, the party now has the numbers required to pass critical legislation, approve appointments, and amend key national policies without opposition backing.

Ayariga’s statement signals a period of intensive legislative activity, with the NDC poised to shape Ghana’s policy direction heading into future elections and reform cycles.
